Overview

La Folie Lodge is a peaceful and charming boutique hotel located on Don Daeng Island, nestled along the banks of the Mekong River. As one of the standout Laos hotels, it offers a slower, more meaningful way to experience southern Laos.

There are about 25 wooden rooms and suites, including river-view bungalows, a private two-bedroom villa (The Residence), and the Suite Mai Sak.

For dining, the lodge’s restaurant uses ingredients from local farms and its own garden, serving a mix of Lao and Western dishes.

La Folie Lodge is also a great base for exploring the Bolaven Plateau - the hotel arranges full-day tours to the plateau’s waterfalls, coffee plantations, and hill tribes. Guests can also join wellness retreats, yoga retreats, or cultural programs that connect them to the nature and heritage of the region.

To reach the lodge, you’ll take a private boat from Champasak, which lands directly on the island, adding to the feeling of a real escape. Contact us now to book La Folie Lodge and other TOP Bolaven Plateau hotels.

Absolutely everything about this resort was superb! Vegan and vegetarian food was scrumptious! The room was very romantic and really comfortable. There is this beautiful old-fashioned charm to the place that leaves you very relaxed, calm and wanting to come back for more. My husband and I loved absolutely everyone who works in La Folie Lodge - so friendly, so accommodating, so warm and welcoming! We simply loved everything about the resort! Most recommended

Great place clean and well maintained. Friendly especially Bee who fixed any minor issues. Lovely room and hard to fault. Will definately recommend to anyone. Only one suggestion wouls be to put small fridge in each room. Well done Bee and La Folie

Our stay at La Folie Lodge was a complete delight. We arrived by hotel boat from Champasak, gliding gently across the Mekong, then by tractor across white sand to the hotel. The restaurant is a sala type construction, airy and cool and serves delicious food and drink all day and evening. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are attentive, extremely competent and shyly friendly. The accommodation is in stylish bungalows on stilts, made of traditional materials, which fit subtly into the landscape of the island. Nothing is higher than the tree line. The rooms are charming, dark wooden floors, extremely comfortable beds with fresh, crisp bedding and roomy bathrooms with good quality towels. All the rooms have balconies overlooking the Mekong, with comfortable chairs to while away time looking at water buffalo grazing, boats quietly pottering up and down the river. Air con and an overhead fan give restful sleeps. The swimming pool is sparkling clean and somehow never full even when the hotel is busy. Mature gardens are full of interesting plants and trees (some with labels) and there's a vegetable garden across a track that provides much of the fresh food for the restaurant. The hotel is involved with the island community and it's fun to cycle through small villages on sandy tracks, no cars! An amazing experience, probably the loveliest hotel we've been to in South East Asia.

We absolutely loved our time at La Folie. It’s on a beautiful island where you can stay in comfort but also experience real Laos rural life. We spent about 4 days in total in La Folie and, if budget allows, would really recommend spending some time here so that you can cycle around the island and just take your time to soak up the atmosphere. Cycling around the island is reasonably hard work because of the sandy trails but it is so worthwhile as we really felt we got a feel for local life on our various trips around the island. The hotel itself is lovely, with comfy rooms that reflect the surroundings and with lovely views over the Mekong. It was wonderful to sit and watch the changing skies and colours. The pool area is very relaxing and the restaurant serves a surprising variety of good food, especially given the location and the fact that everything has to be brought on to the island.

La Folie Lodge: it cares for you as much as it cares for the people on Don Daeng (meaning Red Island). The grounds are beautiful, rich with flowers and butterflies. The verandahs of the rooms all overlook the mighty Mekong. The pool is deep and refreshing. The food is delicious (try the homemade bread, and the homemade yogurt...) Borrow La Folie’s bikes for a ride through paddy fields, little villages, past temples and wallowing buffalo, always with the backdrop of tree-clad mountains in the bluish distance. La Folie has its own twin-hulled long tailed boats where you sit like kings and queens on chairs, shaded by Laotian black umbrellas. Take a trip to Champasak on the mainland and visit world famous Wat Phou, the largest Khmer temple outside Ankhor Wat. Wonderful

What a beautiful little gem! This Lodge is one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen! The amazing pool, super delish food, beautiful rooms all in an amazing garden full of flowers, small island where you can cycle and explore all on your own and amazing staff!! We could not be happier, honestly. Thank you guys for everything

This lodge is the perfect setting for a truly unique Christmas holiday. The location, accommodations and most of all the staff made our 5 day stay one of the best we’ve had in Southeast Asia. For Christmas Eve, the lodge prepared a very sweet celebration with live music cocktails and a table service dinner. We also really enjoyed the cooking class with Mr. Mee at his village cafe. Going off island was easy and we enjoyed taking the complimentary bicycles into to town to explore. Chez Mama’s is worth a stop for picking up a special woven scarf or wall hanging. Each day at the lodge was perfect relaxation either by the pool or on our bungalow deck especially because of the kind and generous staff. It is well worth the time to travel here and stay for a while

We visited for lunch and was surprised at what was amazing food. Each dish we had seemed to set a new standard. Not sure if this is true for all items but I’ve never had better bruschetta than what was served here. The view is amazing and the service nice and professional. Highly recommend

We booked for one night and ended up extending for three! This hotel and island are truly out of time, magical places. From the very unusual arrival, the check-in with Bee, the rooms entirely made out of wood, the natural amenities... The food was very tasty and fairly priced for such a remote area. The breakfast was one of the best we had in Laos, and special mention for the vegetarian options (thank you!). Our only regret is that we should have booked earlier instead of staying at the horrible place on the other side of the Mekong, do not hesitate to stay at least 2 nights otherwise it would be such a waste

River cruise from Bagan to Mandalay

Best cruise ! If you go to Burma river cruise is the best way to see the country from top to bottom. There is a tower in Bagan from which you can see whole beauty of most amazing place. For some reason tour guides don’t tell you about it, we only found out when we stayed at the hotel which is attached to the observation tower. It was most odd that tour guides don’t take you there or mention this place, may be for political reason I don’t know. But I would easily swap walking to another temple to this tower visit instead. What I am trying to say is that if you ever In Bagan just take a taxi and go there it’s only takes 10-15 min drive from the river. Yangon was not impressive, so I would recommend Bagan instead and all the way to Mandalay. Food was world class, stuff could not do enough to please us. Food possibly varies depending on cruise ship. The company we used provide impeccable service, we highly recommend booking your holiday through them.
